How is the Master Dynamic MW07 Plus battery life
The MW07 Plus has top-notch battery life for noise cancelling headphones, outperforming both the Apple AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM3. We recorded a standalone playtime of 8 hours, 58 minutes with noise cancelling on. It gets better though: the unit supports quick charging, too. You get five hours of listening from 15 minutes in the case and a full charge cycle takes just 40 minutes. The stainless steel case supplies you with an additional three charges to the earbuds, granting you more than 35 hours of playback altogether.
When you do need to charge up, just use the provided USB-C to USB-C cable. Master & Dynamic also provides a USB-C to USB-A adapter for those without USB-C charging bricks.

Who is the MW07 for
- People headed to the gym after work. These might not look like it because we’ve been conditioned to expect plastic when it comes to exercise ‘buds, but the MW07 has an IPX4 certification. You shouldn’t submerge them (and I’d still recommend a cheaper pair of earbuds for the gym), but at least you know they can survive your post-work trip to the gym.
- Anyone who doesn’t want AirPods. For some reason, I’ve heard people say the reason they use AirPods is because of the solid build and design. They’re plastic but don’t feel cheap. If you want something just a premium feeling as the AirPods but would prefer them to look better and be a little more discreet, these are for you.
Noise cancelling is decent enough
The active noise cancelling is effective but not nearly as good as the Sony WF-1000XM3 ANC true wireless earbuds.
Master & Dynamic’s noise cancelling isn’t the greatest, but it’s one of the best true wireless models with that feature. In the chart above, the higher the line, the more a given frequency is quieted. This means low-pitched sounds like washing machines, dryers, and plane engines will sound about ¾ as loud with ANC on. Higher pitched noises are easier for the earbuds to block out by way of destructive interference. If you do a lot of flying and want a compact noise cancelling solution, the Sony WF-1000XM3 is a better pick.
How are they built
For those wondering about the build quality, these really do feel worth the premium price tag from the moment you open the box. The stainless steel charging is a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but aside from the AirPods case, it’s the best feeling one I’ve used by far. It’s definitely built better with a magnetic lid, three small LED lights that let you know when they’re charging, and rounded edges so that it slides easily into pockets. The AirPods case still has a slight edge in my book, but only because it’s lighter since it’s made of plastic. But that’s personal preference and if you just felt $299 on a pair of earbuds, the heavy weight of the case will feel good in the hand. It feels like you’re holding something that will last.
The case and the earbuds are both sturdy and beautifully made.
The premium build applies to the earbuds as well. Master & Dynamic really wants you to know that these are made from a handcrafted acetate. Initially I was skeptical; that material sounds like it would be heavy, and the design on the earbuds reminds me of a marble countertop. But after using them for a few weeks I can say that you barely feel the weight when you put them in your ears, and the design is prettier in person.
The fit wings are also a clever way of making sure these stay put in your ears. Though they’re practical, I never liked the way that the wing tips look on workout ‘buds like the Jaybird X4. These get it right as they’re more minimal in aesthetic since they push against the inside of your ear to stay in place rather than curving along the outside. That said, it is a little uncomfortable after a while but it isn’t painful.
The minimal Master & Dynamic logo also doesn’t look half bad.
As nice as these earbuds look, it’s the smaller details that made me a fan. The playback controls on the MW07 earbuds are intuitive, with a single multifunction button on the right earbud and two volume buttons on the left. Then there’s also the autopause/autoplay function with is useful and cleverly implemented, so it works by default without even needing an app. On the inside of each earbud is a small sensor that knows when you’re wearing the ‘buds. So if you take one earbud out the music will mute until you put them back in. This was helpful when I wanted to listen to announcements on the bus or the train. Rather than needing to use a fancy swipe or gesture like on other headphones, simply taking one out does the job.
If there’s one complaint I have with the build besides the slight discomfort while wearing them, I’d say it was that the buttons feel more squishy than clicky. It’s a small gripe, but it’s something you notice on first use. Thankfully, these also have an IPX4 certification so if you were looking for workout earbuds and want to go completely wireless these are surprisingly good for that.
Our Passion for Arts Education
Master & Dynamic is proud to invest in the next generation of creatives. Art and music are essential parts of every student’s education. Arts programming teaches students how to articulate their ideas in a communicable form, while cultivating a creativity that can be employed in any area they pursue.
Since 2014, we’ve partnered with Harlem Village Academies (“HVA”) High, a public charter school in Harlem and part of the five-school HVA network, to support their arts and music programs. Our contributions established HVA High’s foundational art program, offering 2D and 3D art classes in the high school, and our headphones allow students to do greater independent and small group work in their music classes.
We also support the Center for Arts Education (“CAE”), whose mission is providing arts instruction to every NYC public school student. Through our giving, we are committed to supporting the exploration, learning and development of HVA’s and CAE’s students, as well as the wider creative community. Read more about HVA and CAE.
Who should get the Master Dynamic MW07 Plus
Handcrafted acetate covers appear elegant are water-resistant.
- Commuters will benefit from the earbuds’ noise cancelling as it attenuates outside noise, making your train ride a bit more bearable. Active noise cancelling performance isn’t the best, even among true wireless earbuds, but it does the trick for shorter rides.
- Listeners who put a premium on build quality should look no further than Master & Dynamic’s product lineup. Whether you’re in search of in-ears, on-ears, or over-ears, the New York company has it all. These earbuds are durable and eye-catching.
- Affluent athletes looking for versatile workout earbuds should gather their couch cushion pennies for the MW07 Plus, because these IPX5 earbuds can take a sweat. While they’re water-resistant, they aren’t dust-resistant, so if you rock climb keep looking: chalk-related damage may void the warranty.
What do they sound like
The charging case gives another three full charges.
Normally, I don’t expect too much from true wireless earbuds. So that could be the reason why the MW07 earbuds took me by surprise. Don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to ditch your over-ears for these. Still, considering what we know about Bluetooth streaming and the struggles that true wireless ‘buds have had in the past with regard to sound quality, I was really surprised by how good these sound. I’m not sure whether it’s the 10mm Beryllium dynamic drivers, the isolation of the ear tips, or the aptX codec, but these rival some of the better Bluetooth earbuds I’ve heard and beat the rest. So yeah, when it comes to true wireless earbuds these are for sure one of the better sounding options you’re going to find. That said, don’t get your hopes up. They’re still true wireless Bluetooth earbuds.
Lows are emphasized enough to make basslines and kicks stand out without stepping too much into the lower mids. The separation between the bass kicks, hums, and Nathaniel Rateliff’s deep voice at the beginning of S.O.B was surprisingly good. It didn’t sound like any one aspect of the song was masking the other. That said, I did find that instruments in the mids weren’t as clearly separate as I would’ve liked.
It was hard to differentiate between the trumpets and piano throughout the song Rattlin’ Bones by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band unless they were playing solo. So if you’re big on Jazz music these might not do it for you. That said, instruments in the high end didn’t share those issues and all of the cymbal and hi-hats throughout the song Morris Brown by Outkast had a good amount of detail and spacing between them.
There is no denying the premium materials and craftsmanship of the Master & Dynamic MW60 Wireless Over Ear Headphones. Whether in gunmetal/black or silver/brown, these cans are set to impress with a modern, retro-throwback look. The MW60 headphones are well-built with some incredible engineering and attention to physical detail. And you don’t have to be an audiophile to appreciate the sound that comes through these headphones. Whether you’re just a regular listener, enthusiast, or anyone in between, the MW60 brings a level of clarity and detail to where it’s almost like hearing your music again for the first time.
The whole kit and kaboodle comes with three cases, two cables, and one Master & Dynamic MW60 wireless over-ear headphones
However, the wild card is going to be how well the MW60 headphones actually fit your head. The final (retail) version will have some design tweaks that are meant to alleviate issues and improve upon the comfort and clamping force. Even a small adjustment can make a big difference. But those with above average-sized heads may still find the ear cups to have insufficient length. And if not much is changed with the ear pad shape and/or depth, users may find the fit and seal a bit limiting. Without a proper seal, which may require having ideal head and ear size, shape, and positioning, the audio performance will suffer adversely.
Hopefully, the final versions improve upon the Bluetooth performance as well as the fit/comfort. The MW60 headphones are meant to pack a serious wireless range, which this pre-production review unit couldn’t deliver. And even at a short distances with no interference, wireless audio streams were subject to occasional interruptions.
If you have an ear for music, eye for aesthetic, and the pocketbook to back it up, the US$549 will feel like money well spent. The Master & Dynamic MW60 headphones, available to purchase now, are the kind you wear when you want the world to vanish, leaving you with the sound and purity of your favorite music tracks.

Update (Dec 6, 2015): As a follow-up, Master & Dynamic sent us a final retail version of the MW60 headphones, and the small changes do indeed make a big difference. The headband is a little longer and more rounded, which (at maximum cup extension) guides the pads to sit squarely over the ears. If you happen to have an above average-sized head, you might have to angle the band back just a touch and/or poke your earlobes in to get that last bit of reach, but it’s there. The clamping force is directed evenly – almost perfectly – significantly reducing any pinching sensation towards the top of the ear pads, at the temple. The retail version of the MW60 headphones are quite comfortable to wear (versus the pre-production unit), as designed.
The shape and orientation of the ear pads remain the same, but now they’re capable of creating a proper seal without any tricks (e.g. holding the cups down or wearing a tight beanie over the top). The cushion makes full contact against the skin, neck and all, almost all the time. The only exception, which can apply to many over-ear headphones out there, is when you turn your head all the way left/right. Depending on how far your neck muscle flexes versus the ear pad depth, you may or may not notice a thing. But having this complete audio seal leads to maximum noise isolation, minimal leaking, and fullness of the music’s mids and lows. And all of that counts for a lot.
As for the Bluetooth wireless range, the retail version of the MW60 headphones makes good on it’s promise, with only a small caveat. Under ideal conditions (e.g. an open field or empty street), the MW60 toes a distance of approximately 123 ft (38 m) before losing the audio connection. However, music stops being listenable at around 105 f t (32 m) as the Bluetooth starts to sputter in and out. Although the MW60 headphones come in a little shy of having four times the range of a standard Bluetooth connection, Master & Dynamic still earn a pass. There are many Bluetooth devices that can’t achieve a functional operating distance even half of their own listed specification.
But when it comes to real-world use in homes or offices, the MW60 headphones’ Bluetooth wireless range lets you wander out of sight without losing the tunes. A connected smartphone can be left at the desk as you cross a couple of rooms (and walls) or go up/down a floor. And this is with all the typical furniture, appliances, moving bodies, and obstacles that tend to populate such places. Once you start enjoying this kind of Bluetooth freedom, it may be hard to go back to anything else.
How do the Master Dynamic MW07 Plus compare to other true wireless earbuds
The MW07 Plus (right) are slightly larger than the MW07 Go (left).
Master & Dynamic takes pride in its products, and rightfully so: the company knows how to make gorgeous headphones. The fact remains, though, that the $300 asking price is steep even for true wireless earbuds. The MW07 Plus becomes even more difficult to justify after taking into account how Sony’s WF-1000XM3 is occasionally on promotion for ~$200, and those earbuds have significantly better noise cancelling than the MW07 Plus.

Granted, most people are probably considering Master & Dynamic products for their style and build quality above all else. If that happens to be you, then the Master & Dynamic MW07 is the best noise cancelling true wireless option when it comes to design. Just temper your expectations regarding ANC performance because, again, it’s fine but it’s not as good as other earbuds, including the Apple AirPods Pro.

How long does the battery last
The charging case has three LED lights that let you know the battery status of the ‘buds and the case itself.
As cool as true wireless earbuds are, their Achilles heel has always been battery life. Something like the Jabra 65t does a good job at reaching of playback time at a little over 5 hours, but everything else falls below that and the MW07 ‘buds are no exception. Master & Dynamic claim you’ll get about 3.5 hours of constant playback, but in our testing, we got a little less at three hours and two minutes.
The charging case does add an additional three charge cycles, and there is a quick charge feature that will give you about 40 percent of battery in only 15 minutes on the charger. Practically, I don’t see too many people having an issue with battery life as I doubt people will be listening for more than three hours anyway. Plus, the quick charge feature is nice to have if you forget to charge them and are headed to the gym for a quick workout, but if you want the longest battery life possible, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
Microphone quality is fine but lower registers will sound more accurate than typical female vocals during phone calls.
The integrated microphones sound fine and make for a convenient alternative to using your smartphone’s mic. There are two beam-forming mic arrays, one for each earbud, which works well if you often listen in mono mode. Some deviation is apparent throughout the human voice’s frequency range, but it’s not so extreme that one vocal range will sound vastly inaccurate compared to another. Instead, friends may describe your voice as “muffled” due to some slight attenuation from the 150-400Hz range.
Master & Dynamic MW07 Plus microphone demo:
Apple’s AirPods Pro microphone system does a better job at negating ambient noise especially while walking, but the MW07 Plus is perfectly fine for casual and seated business calls.

Carolyn Rowan.
What is the Master Dynamic MW07 Plus like
Although the earbuds appear large at first glance, the housings don’t rub against the ear in an uncomfortable manner.
Just like the original MW07 true wireless earbuds, the MW07 Plus is extremely well built. From the stainless steel charging case to the handcrafted acetate finishes, I have nothing but praise for Master & Dynamic’s attention to detail. The D-shaped earbuds are available in four colorways: Steel blue, White marble, Tortoiseshell, and Black quartz.
Related: Best true wireless earbuds
No matter which pattern you select, you’re afforded a canvas carrying pouch, five pairs of silicone ear tips, and three pairs of brilliantly designed Fit Wings. These are by far my favorite solution to maintaining a secure fit with total wireless earbuds: the comb-like bristles provide flexibility with each sizing and don’t irritate the skin.
The housings taper off into angled nozzles for an ergonomic fit. Each earbud has a proximity sensor to recognize when it’s removed or inserted, facilitating automatic pause or play functionality. There were only a few times when this didn’t work properly, and it was quickly remedied by repeating the removal process. Playback and call controls are accessible via buttons on each earbud. A volume rocker sits atop the left earbud and a multifunction button occupies the right one. The latter lets you access your virtual assistant, take calls, and skip songs.
Instead of a textile covered charging case like the one provided with the MW07 Go model, the MW07 Plus comes with a stainless steel charging case. This is larger and accounts for the bigger build of the premium earbuds, likely to lodge all the components required for ANC. The case is plain, save for the three LEDs lining the front and USB-C input in the back. Its magnetic closing mechanism works well and didn’t accidentally open during my time with the earbuds.
Hows the connection
The earbuds fit well and don’t fall out, though they aren’t the most comfortable.
One of the best features of the AirPods is that they auto-connect as soon as you take them out of the case, and the MW07 do that to the best of their ability. You won’t get a fancy animation on your phone, but you also won’t need to hold down any buttons and wait for blinking lights (unless you’re repairing to another device). The MW07 automatically enter pairing mode as soon as you take them out of the case, so you can just connect to them in Bluetooth settings. Once you’ve done that initially, they’ll automatically pair to the last device so that by the time you get them out of the case and into your ears they’re already connected.
The controls are right on top of the earbuds and are easy to get to.
My only complaint is that while it’s great for pairing to a single device, it’s less seamless when connecting to multiple devices. It isn’t a hassle, but it’s not smooth either. You’ll need to re-pair by holding down the multifunction until you can enter pairing mode. On the bright side, once you’re connected the connection strength is great. These have Bluetooth 4.2 and use the aptX codec, so streaming is stable and the range is surprisingly good. Not to mention that audio-visual lag is none existent so if you stream a lot of videos during your commute you won’t have to deal with the annoying lag that plagues so many Bluetooth products.
In regular use, I had a few random stutters when the phone was in my pocket, and none while it was on my desk. While the MW07 earbuds aren’t perfect, they get the job done in most cases. Playback controls also work as you’d expect, with a single tap of the multifunction button pausing or playing music, a double tap skipping to the next song, triple tap returning to a previous song, and holding it down to access your phones personal assistant.

Louis Vuitton
